DISCLOSURE SCALE: Rubies and Sapphires

The exclusively developed “Pillar & Stone Disclosure Scale” will help you make the right choice when buying Rubies, Sapphires and Emeralds from our company. It also enables you to inform your clients about the properties of each gemstone and about the type and degree of enhancements.
We make an effort to separate Sapphires and Rubies by how much heat treatment the stones have received, or by the type of heat treatment induced. These classifications are useful, since the value of heat treated stones is lower as the degree of flux content is higher.
The seller of a treated stone should also disclose the nature of the treatment.
These guidelines are effective since April 2001.
The US Federal Trade Commission and the CIBJO have issued new guidelines for the Jewelry Industry.
The guidelines state that it is unfair or deceptive to fail to disclose a gem treatment if:
- The treatment has a significant effect on the stone’s value.
- The treatment is not, or may not, be permanent.
- The treatment creates special care requirements for the gemstone.
